Some resolutions... - Einige Vorhaben...

Today I took some resolutions about my work in the future.

I'm not happy at all with the way things are happening in the world. I'm very concerned about the environement and social politics. I don't want to support the way taxes are applied to the advantage of wealthy people and to the detriment of poorer ones, old people and families.

I was thinking about all these issues for a long time and pondered the possible decisions. I want to get out of the system as much as I can. I'm already retired and want to try new ways of interacting in this world. A new option to avoid consumption and consumerism.

So I decided for me:

  • not to sell any more but to swap.
  • to accept only paying in kind.
  • to use my blog for interaction, exchange of information, free tutorials, collaborative projects (I have some ideas about new sorts of challenges)
  • to be free for chosing any techniques for my art (I feel I'm in a kind of mold at the time, working only small for instance because people can't afford bigger pieces...)
  • to share, share, share

  • teilen, teilen, teilen
For the moment this is all I have to say about this theme. I just wanted to explain why I'm working differently now.

This doesn't mean at all that I think that selling is wrong! I'm in the lucky position to live in a farm and being self sufficient. I just don't see the point of having to do a terribly complicated bookkeeping (write the time I leave for driving to the post office, the kilometers I drive, when I arrive, when I come back, just to give you an example) now that I'm retired. It's the story of the fisher, you surely know it:

Das bedeutet nicht, dass ich etwas gegen Verkaufen habe! Ich bin in der glücklichen Lage, in einer Landwirtschaft zu leben und Selbstversorger zu sein. Ich verstehe nicht mehr, warum ich eine total komplizierte Buchhaltung führen muss angesichts meines fast nicht existentes Einkommen. Es ist die Geschichte des Fischers.

"The American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked.

Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, "Only a little while.” The American then asked, "Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?" The Mexican said, "With this I have more than enough to support my family's needs." The American then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?" The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life." The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing; and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat: With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor; eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then Los Angeles and eventually New York where you will run your ever-expanding enterprise." The Mexican fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?" To which the American replied, "15 to 20 years." “ But what then?" asked the Mexican. The American laughed and said that's the best part. "When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions." "Millions?...Then what?" The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."

Sorry that they use an American banker, you could use any nationality!!

I hope you continue enjoying my blog!

  2. After your siesta, you might enjoy the writings of Jared Diamond with your (locally produced)wine. Of particular interest might be the short essay "Man's Greatest Mistake," (or something like that) and "Collapse."

I envy your self sufficient life. I also enjoy the equality of swaps as well and wish you much satisfaction with your new arrangement.

  5. Ahh ..this really resonated with me on so many levels, thanks so much for posting your feelings ...
I feel such a strong pull towards simply sharing what I know ... teaching sharing as part of anew human way of interaction ... to be free from the monetary "label" and "value" that is attached to art, to creativity -- the judging of waht something is worth or not ..

I like the thought of being able to barter ...to swap ... and make art that responates with my soul ..

I have started teaching introspective art and mixed media journaling
on my website, i make videos ...and i dont charge i simply share what I know ...

I am glad I am not alone

  6. Oh Sara ...........I so agree with you! It concerns me that we create more bills and other problems for ourselves because of our rushing around life style. It is a vicious circle and a treadmill that is so hard to jump off.

Big congratulations to you for having the insight to do something about it.

I think you have the idyllic life living off tha land - if i could , I would.

Keep in touch - I admire you and your work and perhaps (just perhaps) will find a little time to join in with your swaps and exchanges.

I so want to give a little back to this world too.

Big hugs to a very generous and caring lady.

  7. Sara ,I admire your decision. You have obviously been doing a lot of deep thinking to arrive at it.I'm looking forward to seeing the new ways your work will develop.I can understand how you will feel a sense of freedom to remove the need for 'saleability'.
I have the same thoughts about consumerism and feel very torn about the need to sell and along with that the need to promote ,which accompanies it.Although I've reduced my personal consumption to a very low level I still need to earn enough to cover unavoidable household expenses.
It makes me sad that I can't spend more time on swaps and trading because I can't justify the time when I should really be trying to make some income...roll on retirement!

  15. I love you for saying some things, which go through my mind for so long now! Swapping things is just right up my alley!! The best thing, that comes to my mind about swapping is, that you build a connection between the piece, you give away and the piece you receive!
Money just goes into the box!
We so often forget that money has no value on it's own, that it's just always the substitute for anything!
    Hugs!!

  17. Hi Sara,

What a fabulous post, so great to share your awareness for our environment. We do all get caught up in life as it is today...busy, busy, busy! So, it is nice that you are able to take the time to notice these things and bring them to our attention also.
I love that you are retired and able to live on a sustainable farm. Looking forward to many more visits to your inspirational blog!

p.s. I have been putting aside some nicely coloured plastic bags to cut into strips and make my own bowl or maybe even a shopping bag???

  18. So glad I visited, today, Sara! I really needed that reminder. Life is so abundant...and money is simply a tool. Very useful, at times of need, but need and want can often be confused with one another.

    Beautiful blog!

    You're instantly inspiring me!
Actually I'm not surprised that you came up with this beautiful idea - and the way you stated it, is just simple and right. I love the idea and from my own experience I know it's the way of joy and peace in the heart :-)

What a generous and wonderful thing your blog is. I appreciate the visual work I view here regularly but now to know that there will be tutorials too! I am so frustrated with art school, feeling like I am not learning what I want and need to learn. What a cool thing the internet is, that we can meet and share and change the world. Go well.
