Scandinavian Technique

Today I was procrastinating in the web when I discovered some very interesting Swedish sites. One of them showed an intarsian technique I decided to try in my sampler for one of the motifs. You can follow the link to see the original site of historicaltextiles.org

My try is the following one:

 I draw the contours of "an animal" with my Frixion pen from PILOT. This is a tip from mine: they are the most marvelous thing to work on textiles because you can draw what you want, correct it with another line on top, whatever, because if you iron it afterwords it will completely disappear!! as you can see on the next two photos!!

Before you begin with the couching you should sew the fabric to the felt with very small stitches, you don't have to turn back the border.

You can use it to draw you own drawings and stitch on top of the lines, for transferring pictures, etc. 

Here you see how I began working with the thread I'm going to couch. I use a thinner one to do the couching on top of this one. I threaded a needle and stitched through the felt so that the knot stays on the back.

Here I began with the couching following the line along the border of the appliqué and putting the thicker thread on top of the fabric close to the border while stitching.

 Here I finished the stitching and on the top left you see how I pull the thicker thread to the back with a needle to have a neat finish.

Here is the finished little guy. Guess what animal it is and then tell me because I have no clue... :-)

I noticed that this technique es very good for having a good contrast between the figures and the background in some cases. If you look at the kind of owl I did on another rectangle, you will see that the owl doesn't rag out of the felt like this one does.

This small houses piece where I practiced some couching possibilities will be the one for the raffle, it isn't finished yet. I will put another piece in the wall hanging but you get the idea of how it could be.

This post was to explain once more the overall idea. My ideas and plan can continue to evolve as I don't know yet how I'm going to put them together. 

Doing a more interesting background

Before beginning with the embroidery I added some triangles and cut outs of the remaining felt (to the right) to the background to make it more interesting.

I will begin with the embroidery after attaching these pieces like an appliqué with tiny stitches all around like you see in the second photo.

The surface was a felted piece of about 40 x 50 cm (15" x 16")

Each rectangle is about 8 x 12 cm (2 1/2" x 4")

The idea is to improve or use your imagery and your use of basic stitches for making the piece more interesting and to push your boundaries. The running stitch allows an infinity of uses on your work, just try new ones, different space between rows, thin and coarse yarns, one or two threads on one needle, changing direction, overlapping, etc.

Because we have many rectangles and we wish to do a wall hanging or book , we can practice different ways to use the same stitch in different rectangles, if this enhances the composition.

I think I have to explain more what I mean with a Semi-Challenge.

I have set a purpose for my work, inspired by the article I told you about, the steps you should also follow if you take part in the "Practice Group" are:

1) find a purpose: in this case the goal is to improve the use of simple stitches, like running stitch, stem stitch, feather stitch, satin stitch, couching, french knots, bouillon knot, etc (not the fancy ones).

2) the background pieces should be small, not bigger than 10 x 12 cm (4" x 5"), smaller would be even better. I use felt as background because I want to experiment with this medium, you could use fabric. At the end you could eventually sew all pieces together or make a book with them. I will sew them together as a sampler.

3) find your imagery, decide what imagery you like to use in your work. I like to use faces and objects, buildings and a kind of spirituality mixed with everyday life. Perhaps you like to use flowers or animals, or seascapes, or whatever!! You don't have to put some imagery in all your pieces, you can just try different uses of the same stitch by changing the space in between rows, length of stitch, yarn types, etc.

4) remember this is a practice and you allow yourself to make pieces you don't like at all but that will help to decide what you like or don't like and grow with the repetition!! We are not doing masterpieces, we are playing with the material to see what suits us and get a good practice.

I opened a folder "Practice Group" in Pinterest where to put your photos of the process and exchange comments with the other participants. Please ask me for an invite so that you can also post your regular work, no matter how it looks like, all will be a big help for the group!! I mean it is different than the earlier ones!). I will raffle a small piece of mine done within the process.

 I won't be posting regularly but often and you follow your own pace. The raffle will be on the 31st of July 2018.

Celle-ci va etre la seule traduction au francais car le travail est très personnel et je vais prendre des photos très détaillées de ce que je fait, ce qui vous preméttra de suivre les idées.

L'idée est de grandir dans la pratique de la broderie et la composition. J'ai lu un article et vu les videos de Sue Stone et j'ai trouvé son sythème très intéressant. Je vais essayer de faire quelque chose de semblable dans mon "Practice Group" suivant ces points:

1) Avoir une finalité dans votre travail sur les petites pièces que nous ferons. La finalité est de voir toutes les possibilités offertes par les points de broderie plus simples, comme les points d'avant, de feston, de noeud, de tige, etc.

2) Les pièces de base seront pas plus grandes que 10 x 12 cm, encore mieux si elles sont plus petites.
Je vais travailler sur feutre car c'est une partie de mon expériment. Vous pouvez aussi travailler sur tissu. À la fin vous pouvez coudre toutes les pièces ensemble ou faire un livre avec elles. Je vais les coudre pour avoir un "cadre échantillon"

3) Trouvez les motifs que vous aimez le mieux. Je vais travailler avec les miens, visages, paysage, tout un peu spirituel et banal. Trouvez votre choix, la botanique, la vie de mer, etc...Vous ne devez pas mettre des images sur toutes les pièces, vous pouvez les couvrir avec des lignes de pratique de points de broderie en les faisant plus grands, plus proches, un sur l'autre, en utilisant de différents fils, etc.

4) On apprend des erreurs ou des pièces que nous n'aimons pas. Tout est de la pratique!! tout fait part d'une croissance!!! Ne rien rejétter!!

Dieser wird der einzige Text auf Deutsch in diesem Semi-Challenge. Ich werde jetzt alles erklären und dann werden Sie alles folgen können, da die Fotos werden sehr detailliert sein und Sie werden die Idee dahinter schon kennen.

Ich habe die Idee von Sue Stone (auf Englisch) hier gefunden. Es hat mich inspiriert diese 4 Punkte für die Arbeit vorzuschlagen. Die Idee dahinter ist dass Wiederholung und Experimentieren mit einfachen Stichen öffnet eine Welt von Möglichkeiten in der Textilkunst. Gleichzeitig können wir einen Stil finden

1) Ein Ziel in der Arbeit haben. In unserem Fall werden wir alle Möglichkeiten, die die enfachsten Stichen anbieten ausprobieren. Wir werden mit Wiederholungen von z.B. Vorstichen, mit Änderung ihrer Grösse, Abstand, Überlappung, z.B. arbeiten, alles was uns einfällt.

2) Die Stücke sollen nicht mehr als 10 x 12 cm haben, Ich werde auf eine Filzunterlage arbeiten. Ich möchte auch das experimentieren. Sie können aber auch auf Stoff arbeiten.

3) Finden Sie ihr Stil. Verwenden Sie die Motive, die Sie lieber mögen. Ich werde natürlich mit Gesichter, Figuren, Spirituelles und Profanes arbeiten. Sie können die Welt der Pflanzen, der Tiere, abstrakt arbeiten, u.s.w. Man muss nicht alle Stücke mit Motiven bedecken, man kann sie auch für Übungen mit Stichen verwenden.

4)Alles is richtig, auch die Fehler oder Stücke, die uns nicht gefallen!! Sie sind ein Weg zum Ziel und sie zeigen uns Sachen, die uns nicht gefallen. Verwenden sie alle Stücke in Ihrem Werk, es wird ein Mustertuch, indem man die Stücke zum Schluss zusammennäht oder ein Buch, wo Sie Ihre ganze Entwicklung sehen können und Sich an Sachen erinnern, die Sie nicht wiederholen wollen!!

Ich habe eine Mappe "Practice Group" in Pinterest eröffnet, um Fotos von den Arbeiten hinenzugeben. Bitte senden Sie mir eine Nachricht auf lechner.sara@gmail.com wenn Sie an dieses Challenge teilnehmen wollen. Dann werden Sie Ihre Fotos in die Mappe geben und mit den anderen Teilnehmer kommunizieren können. Auch wenn die Stücke nicht so gelungen sind, wie Sie es wollten, wir lernen alle daraus!!

Unter den Teilnehmern, die mindestens 6 Fotos Ihrer Arbeit senden und mit Kommentaren teilnehmen, werde ich zum Schluss eines meiner kleinen Stücken auslosen. Procrastinating in the web I found a wonderful article in https://www.textileartist.org/ where the wonderful English artist Sue Stone has a series of videos you can watch for free about "How to develop a system for experimentation with textiles".

It was actually the help I needed at this moment. How to concentrate in something and to have a guide for my work. I can only recommend you to watch these videos!! Tell me what you think about them if you do and also tell Sue!!

After that I began having a "purpose" and applying it to my techniques.

I cut a felted surface I already had in small pieces (the ruler is in cm!):

and took one of them for my first practice. My purpose is to work with my technique but giving more emphasis to embroidery in simple stitches.

I choose also some other surfaces for cut outs.

I did a kind of face, I cannot live without them...

(I notice I don't have the photos in the right order... but you can imagine it)

At last I got this, using different stitches and yarns in different weights.

Perhaps even if I'm not offering a new challenge you could follow my musings and start a similar project. I will open a Pinterest album for this project and if you want to upload photos of a similar project in Pinterest together with me I will send you an invite so that you are able to do this!

Under all the participants in this project who post at least 6 photos of their growing piece I will do a raffle of one of my pieces at the end.

This is almost a challenge but easier for me to do!! and it is for free.

Je vais montrer ce que je fais en ce moment pour pratiquer la broderie simple avec toutes ses possibilités. Vous verrez des photos qui vous conduiront à travers le tout. Je n'aurai pas besoin de texte.

Vous pouvez joindre ce défi en montant des images à Pinterest dans le dossier que  j'ouvrirai pour cela. Si vous montez plus de 6 photos du procès vous pouvez participer à la tombola à la fin et vous pouvez gagner une de mes petites broderies dans ce jeu. 

Vous pouvez faire tout avec vos motifs ou copier les miens, l'idée c'est de pratiquer les techniques simples sur des petites surfaces, la répétition vous fera dévelloper vos techniques.

Ce n'est pas un challenge, mais ca ne me fait pas tellement de travail et je pense que je peut l'offrir pour mes amies et visites du blog!! Le défi es gratuit.

Es werden kleine Übungen im Sticken auf Filz sein und ich möchte alle Möglichkeiten üben, die die ganz einfachen Stichen erlauben. Damit kann man in seiner Arbeit wachsen. Die vielen kleine Stickereien kann man zum Schluss zu einem Ganzen zusammennähen oder einzeln verwenden..

Man kann sich bei mir anmelden, so dass Sie auch Ihre Fotos in meinem Pinterest-Album uploaden, so dass wir alle sehen können, was alle Teilnehmer machen.

Challenge

Dear friends, this mails is very sad for me to write but I have to do it because I don't want to keep you waiting for the challenge to begin.

I am not going to make any more challenges because my life has taken another turn. I had a terrible creativity blockade and I noticed that this was because I was trying to do the same art over and over just to please my public and I wasn't actually flowing or evolving. I really wanted to offer a last challenge but because of that I'm already stuck for months and the pain of this is too big.

This year I will become 70 and I think there is not much time left to follow my instincts in creativity and developing whatever's still there. I am not giving workshops anymore because of this too.

I wish to begin a journey or re-descovery and freedom. I will continue to post in my blog when the time comes and I hope you will still follow my musing...

Liebe Freunde, es tut mir Leid mitteilen zu müssen, dass ich doch kein Challenge mehr anbieten werde.

Ich habe ein sehr grosse Blockade mit diesem Thema gehabt und ich merke dass ich jetzt, wo ich 70 werde, mehr Zeit und Freiheit für meine Textilexperimente brauche. Deswegen werde ich auch keine Workshops mehr anbieten.

Verzeihen Sie, dass ich den Challenge absage. Ich werde weiter zur gegebenen Zeit wieder in meinem Blog über meine neue Erfahrungen berichten. Schauen Sie von Zeit zur Zeit in den Blog und ich hoffe, dass wir da weiter kommunizieren können.

Mes amis, je suis très triste d'avoir à vous dire que je ne vais pas plus offrir des challenges.

Je n'ai pas plus la force de les écrire car j'aurai 70 ans cette année et je me rends compte que je n'ai

plus beaucoup de temps à dédier à mon travail d'artiste et à faire de nouvelles découvertes. J'aimarai etre encore libre pour faire l'art textile qui me plait en ce moment de ma vie. Je continuerai à écrire sur mon blog mes prochaines aventures. J'espère vous y retrouver là!

Experiments...

I am doing the lower part of the piece I began last week. I am experimenting with appliqué using wool, felted and cotton fabrics. I also try to use positive and negative cutouts. You can follow the idea if you want, I would be happy to see what you discover...

Ich mache gerade den untersten Teil vom Stück, das ich vorige Woche angefangen habe. Ich experimentiere mit appliqué und verwende dazu Woll- und Baumwollstoffe, sowie gefilzte Flächen. Ich versuche auch die positive und negative Teile, die ich ausschneide, zu verwenden. Sie können die Idee nachmachen, ich wäre froh, andere Experimente zu sehen...

Je fais la partie inférieure de la pièce que j'avais commencé la semaine dernière. J'essaye d'utiliser les découpages positives et négatives. Vous pouvez essayer de faire aussi des petits expériments similaires. Je serai ravie de voir d'autres...
