A dark piece of past...

I found this piece made some years ago doing order in my studio. I always thought it was too dark and hadn't find a place for her to live... Now I like it very much, even if it has almost no contrasts. We change our taste along the years. This doesn't make the piece better -I should have used more contrast- but I accept the fact and like it in spite of this...
I did much handstitching on it accentuating some parts.

  1. Sara, yes its darker then most of your other work, but it still speaks of you. I love the intensive stiching and the old photos you have added.

  4. I love this...saw it on flickr earlier and came here to have another look. The rich colours and subtle contrasts really appeal to me.I am interested to know whether you plan every detail before you begin to sew ,or work with the idea and the materials...and let it develop?

  5. For this kind of pieces I mostly plan nothing but I know which materials and techniques I want to use. For example in this piece I wanted to use one of my "fabrics" made out of felted cheesecloth, I wanted to use photographs and some bought organzas I had already some years in my stash. The piece evolved from the mixture of materials and composition considerations. The fun begins when I have to decide which kind of stitchery will enhance the whole thing!
For my wallhangings I mostly use a combination of sketches I do when I'm travelling (I do my best sketches in coffee shops! - à la J.K.Rowling! LOL)
