Cocoons

We are all cocoons hanging in an open cage.

We are working on ourselves all the time and can leave the cage when we thing we're finished.

The most lovely cocoon I know is the one of the "bicho canasto" Oiketicus kirbyi and the butterfly that comes out of it is ugly and considered a "plague"...

I like to meditate on this when I sit on my coffee shop and look at these cages. I love these riddles that have a different outcomes depending on the person who's engaged on the thinking...

The cages are not going to stay on the window sill though. They are part of an installation of 10 cages I'm going to hang from a branch when I finish them.

The cocoons are made of false ivory (a Fimo thing), Polyfilling, scrim/cheesecloth and self made paper. The cages out of wire and vines.

  1. They are serene and beautiful, Sara. 'Garden' was the first thing that came to mind when I saw them.

  2. Sara, you know I love your work, tremendously... but this one disturbed me a little. It made me feel uncomfortable. When I took a closer look and saw the faces it made me feel even worse. How curious are our reactions to art? The concept is great but the picture of it makes me feel so disturbed.

  3. thank you elaine.
candida, i don't always use cute faces in my art. these faces are the ones of many of my bigger pieces. they are the ones of the bare being with no attributes. they are the clay figures before god blows the spirit in them. even if we don't want to see them they are still there.

  4. Sara, they are disturbing, but thats what makes them so wonderful and thought provoking. Actually they remind me of the faces when God has drawn the breath out again..sorry to say this but when the human form is present without the spirit, which, I suppose , is the same thing you said. Suspended literally and metaphorically.

  6. Sara, the faces are wonderful. I think it is the concept that disturbs me, probably the cage... I don't know. On the other hand, the cocoon on the piece of art "Leave your skin behind" is so peaceful to me. Go figure! lol! Anyway, what I love about your work is how powerful it is, full of emotion.

  9. Sara this is weird because I was laying in bed last night thinking of dolls in cocoons and how I could do it and this morning here are yours!
They don't disturb me, they seem to have a serenity about them, perhaps a sense of waiting for that breath to be added

  13. For me the little cocoon figures seem to be in a state of transition. I like the way you placed them. In this white surrounding they seem to exist in another state of beeing. Thank you for sharing your art with us. Gives me a lot to think about !!!!

  17. It's the idea of the OPEN cages, that catches me: I've got a friend who lives in this state: whole live is floating around her and she is not able to leave the open doors of her self-made-cage!
    This is so beautiful, Sara!!

the photographs themselves are also amazing.
